DO ORDINARY THINGS WITH EXTRAORDINARY LOVE

Mother Teresa once said, “ Do ordinary things with extraordinary love”

How do you have an impact on the world? Have a huge hit album? Star in blockbusting film? Score hat trick in the World cup?

Mother Teresa had massive impact in our world. Not because  she was rich, powerful or because had celebrity status. She started out teaching at St Mary's High School in Calcutta but couldn't cope with seeing the poverty outside her classroom. She decided to do something about it.

In 1948, her decision meant she was to devote the rest of her life to working with the poorest people in the slums of Calcutta in India. Instead of teaching in the classroom, Mother Teresa open-air school for the homeless children no one else was prepared to care for.

Since 1948, her charity work has spread all for round the world: into the former Soviet Union , Asia, Africa and South America. Literally millions of missionaries have been inspired by her example of doing “ordinary things with extraordinary love”

Read Micah 6:1-8
1AMP:Hear now what the Lord says: Arise, contend and plead your case before the mountains, and let the hills hear your voice.
2AMP:Hear, O mountains, the Lord’s controversy, and you strong and enduring foundations of the earth, for the Lord has a controversy (a pleading contention) with His people, and He will [pleadingly] contend with Israel.
3AMP:O My people, what have I done to you? And in what have I wearied you? Testify against Me [answer Me]!
4AMP:For I brought you up out of the land of Egypt and redeemed you out of the house where you were bond servants, and I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.
5AMP:O My people, [earnestly] remember now what Balak king of Moab devised and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him; [remember what the Lord did for you] from Shittim to Gilgal, that you may know the righteous and saving acts of the Lord.
6AMP:With what shall I come before the Lord and bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before Him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old?
7AMP:Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

8AMP:He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, and to love kindness and mercy, and to humble yourself and walk humbly with your God?

Questions to Consider
  • How is verse 8 of this passage similar to Mother Teresa's quote above?
  • What ordinary things could you begin doing that might make a difference in your area?

Motion Points
  • Asking God where He wants you serve in your church. Make a list of the ways you can begin to serve those around you
  • Praying for those people in your church who serve others . Ask your church leader to give you a list. Think about writing these people a card thanking them the way they serve.

Hymn For Today - All For Jesus [Mary D. James]

All for Jesus, all for Jesus!
All my being's ransomed powers:
All my thoughts and words and doings,
All my days and all my hours.

Let my hands perform His bidding,
Let my feet run in His ways;
Let my eyes see Jesus only,
Let my lips speak forth His praise.

Worldlings prize their gems of beauty,
Cling to gilded toys of dust,
Boast of wealth and fame and pleasure;
Only Jesus will I trust.

Since my eyes were fixed on Jesus,
I've lost sight of all beside;
So enchained my spirit's vision,
Looking at the Crucified.

Oh, what wonder! how amazing!
Jesus, glorious King of kings,
Deigns to call me His beloved,
Lets me rest beneath His wings.

The Price of Goals

In West Perrine, Florida, USA, Lee Lawrence had a dream .

“Can anyone imagine” , he said, all the churches in the neighborhood…. marching up Homestead Avenue to let the drug pushers know that we won't take it any more?”

The drug dealers didn't like Lee or his vision. Twice he was shot at while getting out his car. The grocery shop he owned was vandalised; then someone tried to burn it down. Refusing to give up, Lee got several pushers arrested. His store became a drug-free haven for the neighborhood kids.

In March 198, Lee walked out his shop and was met by firing a semi-automatic riffle. The first shot knocked Lee to the ground. A second man shot Lee again as he lay on the pavement. Minutes later he was dead. But his vision was not.

On Lee Lawrence’s funeral day , more than 3,000 people from area churches linked arms and march up Homestead Avenue singing, “We overcome: drugs and crime must go!”

It was a dream come true -and the start of big changes in West Perrine.

Lee Lawrence was willing to face the hardship -even death- to see his goal become a reality. Jesus also endured hardship because of His mission to reclaim humanity from sin. Read about it in Luke 22:63-71;

63NIV:The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him.
64NIV:They blindfolded him and demanded, “Prophesy! Who hit you?”
65NIV:And they said many other insulting things to him.
66NIV:At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them.
67NIV:“If you are the Messiah,” they said, “tell us.” Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe me,
68NIV:and if I asked you, you would not answer.
69NIV:But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.”
70NIV:They all asked, “Are you then the Son of God?” He replied, “You say that I am.”
71NIV:Then they said, “Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips.”

Questions To Consider
  • What price were both Lee and Jesus willing yo pay to see their goals become reality?
  • How was Jesus’ response in this passage like the way you respond when others attack your faith? How is your response different from Jesus?

Motion Points
  • Writing down three goals you would be willing to suffer for it
  • Looking through a newspaper to find three people who are suffering for doing right and praying for them each day of the week

Hymn For Today
Abba , Father ! We Approached Thee ( James G Deck )

"Abba, Father!" We approach Thee
In our Savior's precious Name;
We, Thy children, here assembling,
Access to Thy presence claim;
From our sins His blood hath washed us,
'Tis through Him our souls draw near,
And Thy Spirit, too, hath taught us,
"Abba, Father," Name so dear.

Once as prodigals we wandered
In our folly far from Thee,
But Thy grace, o'er sin abounding,
Rescued us from misery;
Thou Thy prodigals hast pardoned,
Kissed us with a Father's love,
Spread the festive board, and called us,
E'er to dwell with Thee above.

Clothed in garments of salvation,
At Thy table is our place,
We rejoice, and Thou rejoicest,
In the riches of Thy grace;
"It is meet," we hear Thee saying,
"We should merry and be glad,
I have found My once lost children,
Now they live who once were dead."

"Abba, Father!" all adore Thee,
All rejoice in Heav'n above,
While in us they learn the wonders
Of Thy wisdom, grace, and love;
Soon before Thy throne assembled,
All Thy children shall proclaim,
"Glory, everlasting glory,
Be to God and to the Lamb!"

CULTS MIXED UP

They are just weird, aren't they? This probably sums up what we really think about cults and what is wrong with them. We don't really bother with what they actually think because it's easy to write them off, just like everyone else does. But what do they think?

The most well known of the “cults” are probably, the Jehovah's Witness. Like Christians, they believe that  the Bible is the inspired word of God. So if they believe in the Bible, then what's the problem with them? The  Jehovah’s Witness’ big mistake is that they don't think Jesus is God. This a complete misunderstanding of the Bible.

After all, the Bible calls Jesus “God”, and says that he forgives people's sins -something only God can do.

Another group, known as the Mormons, also believes in the Bible. But they get Jesus wrong as well. They teach that we need both Jesus and the “new revelation” about God that came in America in 1800s. But Christians have always believed that Jesus is enough for our salvation. We just need to believe in him -we don't need anything extra. So we don't need “Another Testament of Jesus Christ”, as the Book of Mormon calls  itself on the front cover.

People may get Christianity and these kinds of cults mixed up, but 2 John1:7-11 tells us how we can recognise false teaching.

7NIV:I say this because many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist.
8NIV:Watch out that you do not lose what we have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully.
9NIV:Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.
10NIV:If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take them into your house or welcome them.
11NIV:Anyone who welcomes them shares in their wicked work.

Questions to Consider
  • What attitude does Jesus want us to have to cults?
  • How can we be ready to answer their questions?

Motion Points
  • Seeking to understand more of the Christ's teachings so that you will know when a false teacher, “goes beyond”  them (verse 9)
  • Becoming aware of cults operating in your area and learning more about what they believe. Make a list, comparing your findings with Christianity.

Hymn For Today
Church's One Foundation- Samuel J. Stone
1.Is Jesus Christ her Lord,
She is His new creation
By water and the Word.
From heaven He came and sought her
To be His holy bride;
With His own blood He bought her
And for her life He died.

2.She is from every nation,
Yet one o'er all the earth;
Her charter of salvation,
One Lord, one faith, one birth;
One holy Name she blesses,
Partakes one holy food,
And to one hope she presses,
With every grace endued.

3.The Church shall never perish!
Her dear Lord to defend,
To guide, sustain, and cherish,
Is with her to the end:
Though there be those who hate her,
And false sons in her pale,
Against both foe or traitor
She ever shall prevail.

4.Though with a scornful wonder
Men see her sore oppressed,
By schisms rent asunder,
By heresies distressed:
Yet saints their watch are keeping,
Their cry goes up, "How long?"
And soon the night of weeping
Shall be the morn of song!

5.'Mid toil and tribulation,
And tumult of her war,
She waits the consummation
Of peace forevermore;
Till, with the vision glorious,
Her longing eyes are blest,
And the great Church victorious
Shall be the Church at rest.

6.Yet she on earth hath union
With God the Three in One,
And mystic sweet communion
With those whose rest is won,
With all her sons and daughters
Who, by the Master's hand
Led through the deathly waters,
Repose in Eden land.

7.O happy ones and holy!
Lord, give us grace that we
Like them, the meek and lowly,
On high may dwell with Thee:
There, past the border mountains,
Where in sweet vales the Bride
With Thee by living fountains
Forever shall abide!

AN INCH IS AS GOOD AS A MILE

Daniel used to write a column for his school newspaper. It wasn't a big column, but it was fun. He wrote humorously about school food, class workload, or latest bungle of the notoriously bad football team. He had been given the job because his best friend Sam, was the editor . And much to their surprise, the column has become one of the most popular features, even among the kids who attended other schools.

One Monday on the way to class, Daniel saw a student in a wheelchair and an older woman trying -unsucessfully -to push the wheelchair over the kerb.

When Daniel stopped to help, he noticed a wheelchair ramp cut into the kerb just few yards away. But the yellow paint that marked it off had faded, and someone had parked in front of it.

“Unbelievable,” Daniel said, shaking his head.

“Believe it,” said the student in the wheelchair, whose name was Bruce . “It happens all the time. That's all why my mum has to come with me. More than half the ramps haven't been painted for for five years. People just ignore them.”

Daniel smelled a story. He agreed to meet Bruce and his mum the next day. They would bring their extra wheelchair, and Daniel would spend the day trying to get around school in it.

That's how Daniel discovered that the main lift stopped two inches below the floor level (as good as two miles when you're in a wheelchair) . He had trouble negotiating the super narrow doors in all over the school and that was just in six hours.

The next day, Daniel wrote about his experiences ,but somehow that just didn't seem enough. He also attended student council meetings and talked to the headmaster about it .

A few months , later Daniel talked to Bruce agaib. But this time his mum wasn't with him. “She doesn't need to come with any more,” he said . “For some reason , the head just seemed to wake up.”

“Perhaps somebody tapped him on the shoulder ,” Daniel said.

Romans 13:1-10 encourages us to do what’s right in serving our government. In Paul's day, that meant carefully following the laws laid out by Rome. But in today's democracy, it can mean helping to shape policy -just as Daniel. Read the scripture below to see what else Paul said about your relationship with the government;

1NIV:Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.
2NIV:Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.
3NIV:For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended.
4NIV:For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.
5NIV:Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.
6NIV:This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing.
7NIV:Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.
8NIV:Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.
9NIV:The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not covet,” and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
10NIV:Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

Questions to Consider
  • Would Paul have approved Daniel's auction? Why or why not?
  • What's one thing that you can do to apply this passage to your situation?

Motion Points
  • Standing for a place in school or colleges’ student council
  • Writing a letter to your member of parliament, relating your concerns about the disabled , education or someone other issue you care about.

Hymn For Today
Are You Washed In The Blood -Elisha Hoffman

Have You Been To Jesus For The Cleansing Pow'r?
Are You Washed In Blood Of The Lamb?
Are You Fully Trusting In His Grace This Hour?
Are You Washed In The Blood Of The Lamb?

Are You Walking Daily By The Savior's Side?
Are You Washed In The Blood Of The Lamb?
Do You Rest Each Moment In The Crucified?
Are You Washed In The Blood Of The Lamb?

When The Bridegroom Cometh Will Your Robes Be White
Are You Washed In The Blood Of The Lamb?
Will Your Soul Be Ready For The Mansions Bright,
And Be Washed In The Blood Of The Lamb?

Refrain:
Are You Washed In The Blood,
In The Soul Cleansing Blood Of The Lamb?
Are Your Garments Spotless? Are They White As Snow?

WALK BEFORE ME AND BE THOU PERFECT

1.Forth in Thy Name, O Lord I go,
My daily labour to pursue,
Thee, only Thee, resolved to know
In all I think, or speak, or do.

2. The task thy wisdom hath assigned
O let me cheerfully fulfill,
In all my works Thy presence find,
And prove Thy acceptable will.

3. Preserve me from my calling's snare
And hide my simple heart above,
Above the thorns of choking care
The gilded baits of worldly love

4. Thee may I set at my right hand,
Whose eyes my inmost substance see,
And labour on at Thy command,
And offer all my works to Thee.

5. Give me to bear Thy easy yoke,
And every moment watch and pray
And still to things eternal look,
And hasten to Thy glorious day.

6. For Thee delightfully employ
Whate'er Thy bounteous grace
hath giv'n,
And run my course with even joy,
And closely walk with Thee to
heaven.
Amen.
