How many times have you been listening to someone talk and then realised that your mind has been a thousand miles away? And just how embarrassed have you felt when someone has asked you a question relating to that talk? Sometimes it’s not even that you didn't want to hear it, but your mind just wandered!

James 1:25 tells us that people who remember what they heard are “ happy people ” but it also says that they studied and memorised too!

Here is something to think about:

  • You remember 10 percent of what you hear
  • You remember 30 percent of what you write down
  • You remember 45 percent of what you study
  • You remember 100 percent of what memorise!

Consider this illustration, when Ruth went on youth weekend , she was told that there would be a big prize for whoever could memorise the most of the part of the Bible. Some children were going for 50 words that is three or four verses , some decided to get together and test each other on a whole parable. Ruth went for Genesis chapter one.

On the final night of the holiday , ten children had learnt more scripture than they have ever learnt before. The person that came third had learnt 230 words! The person that came second could remember 340 words! Ruth won, she doggedly kept going until she could recite over 500 words of the story of creation!

Sometimes we just need  a little incentive, but each of these people was thrilled to realise that God’s word could be fun to learn and easy to use. Read James 1:17- 27 to discover what James says about studying the Bible.
