When John Wesley was rescued from blazing house as a child, he was convinced that God had saved him for a purpose. As he grew up in eighteenth-century England, he applied all his energy towards accomplishing God's for his life. While studying in Oxford University, John led a group of men known as “ Holy Club.”  They met for Bible Study and prayer, and cared for the sick, poor and imprisoned. Not long after completing his work at the university, John and his brother, Charles, sailed to America to spread Christ's message.

John had good intentions but still felt like a failure. He knew God had given him a purpose in life, but he didn't seem able to carry it out. He needed to know and experience God's heart before he could offer it to anyone else. John returned to England discouraged and disillusioned. “I went to America to convert the Indians , “ John said. But, oh, who shall convert me?”

Then something wonderful happened. On 24 May 1738, John attended a Christian meeting in London, and his life changed. In his journal, John inscribed what happened.

“I felt my heart strangely warned ,” he wrote. “ I felt  I did trust Christ , Christ alone for salvation; and an assurance was given to me that He  had taken away my sins, even mine, and saved me from the law of sin and death.”

John Wesley became one of the most influential men in the history of Christianity. During the 52 years following that experience in 1738, he preached over 40,000 sermons and travelled over 300,000 Kilometres, sharing of Christ with hundreds and thousands.

John needed to understand and worship God before trying to serve Him. The prophet Isaiah had a similar experience that launched his ministry. Read abut Isaiah's encounter with God in Isaiah 6:1-8.;

ESV:In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple.
ESV:Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.
ESV:And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!”
ESV:And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke.
ESV:And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!”
ESV:Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar.
ESV:And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”
ESV:And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me.”

Questions To Consider
  • Why did both John Wesley and Isaiah need to understand God's heart and worship him before they could adequately server God?
  • According to this passage, what do you know about God's character?

Motion Points
  • Asking God to reveal himself to you the way he did to Isaiah or John Wesley

Christ was teaching, and, as usual, others besides His disciples had gathered about Him. He had been speaking to the disciples of the scenes in which they were soon to act a part. They were to publish abroad the truths He had committed to them, and they would be brought in conflict with the rulers of this world. For His sake they would be called into courts, and before magistrates and kings. He had assured them of wisdom which none could gainsay. His own words, that moved the hearts of the multitude, and brought to confusion His wily adversaries, witnessed to the power of that indwelling Spirit which He had promised to His followers.

But there were many who desired the grace of heaven only to serve their selfish purposes. They recognized the marvelous power of Christ in setting forth the truth in a clear light. They heard the promise to His followers of wisdom to speak before rulers and magistrates. Would He not lend His power for their worldly benefit?

"And one of the company said unto Him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me." Through Moses, God had given directions concerning the transmission of property. The eldest son received a double portion of the father's estate (Deuteronomy 21:17), while the younger brothers were to share alike. This man thinks that his brother has defrauded him of his inheritance. His own efforts have failed to secure what he regards as his due, but if Christ will interpose the end will surely be gained. He has heard Christ's stirring appeals, and His solemn denunciations of the scribes and Pharisees. If words of such command could be spoken to this brother, he would not dare to refuse the aggrieved man his portion.
And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. 8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.  Matthew 10:7-8

In the midst of the solemn instruction that Christ had given, this man had revealed his selfish disposition. He could appreciate that ability of the Lord which might work for the advancement of his own temporal affairs; but spiritual truths had taken no hold on his mind and heart. The gaining of the inheritance was his absorbing theme. Jesus, the King of glory, who was rich, yet for our sake became poor, was opening to him the treasures of divine love. The Holy Spirit was pleading with him to become an heir of the inheritance that is "incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away." 1 Peter 1:4. He had seen evidence of the power of Christ. Now the opportunity was his to speak to the great Teacher, to express the desire uppermost in his heart. But like the man with the muck rake in Bunyan's allegory, his eyes were fixed on the earth. He saw not the crown above his head. Like Simon Magus, he valued the gift of God as a means of worldly gain.

The Saviour's mission on earth was fast drawing to a close. Only a few months remained for Him to complete what He had come to do, in establishing the kingdom of His grace. Yet human greed would have turned Him from His work to take up the dispute over a piece of land. But Jesus was not to be diverted from His mission. His answer was, "Man, who made Me a judge or a divider over you?"

Jesus could have told this man just what was right. He knew the right in the case; but the brothers were in a quarrel because both were covetous. Christ virtually said, It is not My work to settle controversies of this kind. He came for another purpose, to preach the gospel, and thus to arouse men to a sense of eternal realities.

In Christ's treatment of this case is a lesson for all who minister in His name. When He sent forth the twelve, He said, "As ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give." Matthew 10:7, 8. They were not to settle the temporal affairs of the people. Their work was to persuade men to be reconciled to God. In this work lay their power to bless humanity. The only remedy for the sins and sorrows of men is Christ.

"The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God." Psalm 14:1.
The gospel of His grace alone can cure the evils that curse society. The injustice of the rich toward the poor, the hatred of the poor toward the rich, alike have their root in selfishness, and this can be eradicated only through submission to Christ. He alone, for the selfish heart of sin, gives the new heart of love. Let the servants of Christ preach the gospel with the Spirit sent down from heaven, and work as He did for the benefit of men. Then such results will be manifest in the blessing and uplifting of mankind as are wholly impossible of accomplishment by human power.
Our Lord struck at the root of the affair that troubled this questioner, and of all similar disputes, saying, "Take heed, and beware of covetousness; for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
"And He spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully; and he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, be merry. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall these things be, which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God."

By the parable of the foolish rich man, Christ showed the folly of those who make the world their all. This man had received everything from God. The sun had been permitted to shine upon his land; for its rays fall on the just and on the unjust. The showers of heaven descend on the evil and on the good. The Lord had caused vegetation to flourish, and the fields to bring forth abundantly. The rich man was in perplexity as to what he should do with his produce. His barns were full to overflowing, and he had no place to put the surplus of his harvest. He did not think of God, from whom all his mercies had come. He did not realize that God had made him a steward of His goods that he might help the needy. He had a blessed opportunity of being God's almoner, but he thought only of ministering to his own comfort.

And leap, ye lame, for joy!

6. My gracious Master and my God,
Assist me to proclaim
And spread through all the earth
The honours of Thy name.

After coming second at the regional karate tournament, Dan McCarthy got an invitation to a national competition. But one week before the trip , he tore the ligaments in his ankle and ended up in a plaster cast.

Still, nothing would stop Dan. He convinced his parents to let him make the trip anyway, promising just to watch the tournament. Once on his way, he told his karate instructor that the doctor had put in a cast only as a precaution. He said he had both his doctor's and parents’ permission to participate. Since, it was removable cast, he took it off when he got to the tournament and competed. He even a few matches.

Although the cast was back on when he got home, his parents worked out what he had done by the way he talked about the competition. They felt betrayed!

Dan paid for his scheme: his ankle healed much more slowly than it would have otherwise. Luckily, the ankle wasn't permanently damaged.

Dan falsely used the authority of his doctor and parents to back up his instructor. In similar way, false prophets appealed to God's authority to back up their lies in Jeremiah 23:23-30

AMP:Am I a God at hand, says the Lord, and not a God afar off?
AMP:Can anyone hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? says the Lord. Do not I fill heaven and earth? says the Lord.
AMP:I have heard what the prophets have said who prophesy lies in My name, saying, I have dreamed, I have dreamed [visions on my bed at night].
AMP:[How long shall this state of things continue?] How long yet shall it be in the minds of the prophets who prophesy falsehood, even the prophets of the deceit of their own hearts,
AMP:Who think that they can cause My people to forget My name by their dreams which every man tells to his neighbor, just as their fathers forgot My name because of Baal?
AMP:The prophet who has a dream, let him tell his dream; but he who has My word, let him speak My word faithfully. What has straw in common with wheat [for nourishment]? says the Lord.
AMP:Is not My word like fire [that consumes all that cannot endure the test]? says the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks in pieces the rock [of most stubborn resistance]?
AMP:Therefore behold, I am against the [false] prophets, says the Lord, [I am even now descending upon them with punishment, these prophets] who steal My words from one another [imitating the phrases of the true prophets].

Questions To Consider
  • Why were Dan's karate instructor and parents in the passage quick to accept lies?
  • When people say, “Honest to God !” do you believe their story more than you would have otherwise? Why or why not?

Motion Pionts
  • Tracking down a rumour you've heard at school and finding out how much is true
  • Mark Twain comment on lying: “ If you tell the the truth you don't have to remember anything.” Think of a time you've lied. Then make a list of all the other lies you had to tell to support it.

Jose Mourinho says he was blameless but "the story is over" after a fracas with members of Chelsea's coaching staff at the end of their 2-2 draw.

The Manchester United manager leapt to his feet and was held back by stewards after Chelsea coach Marco Ianni goaded him following Ross Barkley's late goal.

"It is not my reaction, it is Sarri's assistant," Mourinho said

"Don't do what everyone does and say, 'It's Mourinho who does things.' They have apologised, everything is fine."

Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri confirmed that he and his assistant had apologised to Mourinho straight after the game, with Sarri admitting that his staff were in the wrong.

Lionel Messi was substituted with an arm injury that makes him a doubt for next weekend's Clasico but the Barcelona captain inspired a 4-2 home win against Sevilla to send his side top of LaLiga.

Philippe Coutinho scored from Messi's pass in the second minute to get Barca off to a flying start at Camp Nou on Saturday and the Argentina superstar soon doubled the lead.

But Messi had to be substituted having hurt his right arm in an awkward fall and he could miss Wednesday's Champions League game against Inter, as well as next Sunday's showdown with rivals Real Madrid.

Luis Suarez's second-half penalty and a late strike from Ivan Rakitic secured the points despite consolations from Pablo Sarabia and Luis Muriel, Ernesto Valverde's men moving into first place in the table, with Sevilla third after their four-game winning streak ended.

Barcelona's all-time record goalscorer Lionel Messi will miss next weekend's El Clasico against Real Madrid after suffering a broken arm. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner fell awkwardly on his right arm in the 17th minute of the La Liga clash with Sevilla at the Camp Nou on Saturday and was immediately in visible pain.

He underwent treatment as the game continued with his arm being wrapped by trainers while he laid on the sidelines.

However, he remained down after treatment in obvious discomfort and was unable to continue, eventually being replaced by Ousmane Dembele after 26 minutes.

The club have now confirmed he has fractured a bone in his right arm, ruling him out for the next three weeks including the visit of their arch rivals, along with a crucial Champions League tie against Serie A side Inter.

Gerard Pique acknowledged the absence of Lionel Messi will be a blow but insisted Barcelona can cope without their superstar captain.

Messi will miss three weeks with a fractured arm after suffering the injury in Barca's 4-2 win over Sevilla in Saturday's top-of-the-table La Liga clash.

After setting up Barca team-mate Philippe Coutinho and scoring himself, five-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi landed heavily on his right arm before leaving the field in the first half at Camp Nou.

Messi will sit out next weekend's Clasico against Real Madrid, as well as Barca's Champions League fixtures against Inter.

But Pique believes there is enough cover in the side to come out on top even without the Argentine playmaker in the side.

"Psychologically we know that when he is there we are stronger but we cannot allow his absence to affect us," Barca centre-back Pique said.

"It makes a big difference to have or not to have him but we have enough cover so as not to worry about whether he is there or not."

Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score 400 goals in Europe's top five leagues as Juventus dropped points for the first time this season.

Ronaldo's fifth Serie A goal for Juve was added to his 84 Premier League strikes for Manchester United and 311 in La Liga for Real Madrid. He tapped in after Joao Cancelo's shot was blocked - having earlier hit the post with a header.

But Daniel Bessa equalised with a header from Christian Kouame's cross. The hosts dominated most of the game, but of their 21 shots, only three were on target - all from Ronaldo, who had 11 efforts in total, in the first half.

Ronaldo's landmark puts him 10 goals above the second top scorer in Europe's main leagues, Lionel Messi - who scored his 390th La Liga goal for Barcelona in their 4-2 win against Sevilla.

Thierry Henry's first game in charge of Monaco ended in a 2-1 defeat as Strasbourg profited from a Seydou Sy goalkeeping howler and a Samuel Grandsir red card.

Henry replaced Leonardo Jardim seven days ago after Monaco picked up just six points from their opening nine matches, but their display in Alsace showed no signs of an instant improvement despite the former France star's arrival.

It took the home side 17 minutes to move ahead, but they relied on a woeful error from Sy, who allowed Adrien Thomasson's header to squirm out of his arms and into the net despite it looking like a routine save. The visitors then lost Radamel Falcao to a muscular injury just before half-time.

But Monaco's biggest blow came in the 66th minute when Grandsir – introduced as a substitute just one minute and 51 seconds earlier – was shown a straight red card for a high foot on Anthony Goncalves.

Lebo Mothiba effectively wrapped things up six minutes from time, racing clear and chipping a clever finish over the approaching Sy.
